One of my favorite things about finishing a quilt top is sending it out for longarm quilting. The design choices are endless and you get to skip my least favorite part of quilting — quilt wrestling a quilt on a domestic sewing machine as you quilt it. Can you tell I absolutely love longarm quilters and ADMIRE the work they do?!

In today’s post, I’ll be sharing tips for preparing your quilt for longarm quilting. Longarm quilting discounts for the Color Swatches quilt-a-long. Ideas on pantographs you could use on a Color Swatches quilt. And longarm quilters I’ve personally worked with to longarm my quilts!

Tips for preparing your quilt top for longarm quilting

-Trim all excess threads off of the back and front of your quilt top so they do not show through after it is quilted.

-Press quilt top.

-When piecing backing fabric — use a 1/2” seam allowance — note: most longarm quilters prefer horizontal seams.

-Square backing fabric.

-Press backing fabric and press seam open if possible.

-Be sure that your backing and batting are 4” larger than your quilt on all sides.

-Mark the top of your quilt and backing fabric.

-Don’t baste or safety pin the layers together — layers need to be separate.

-Don’t worry about your piecing skills. This is a no-judgment zone.

-Ask questions if you have them! Longarm quilters are EPIC and want to help you!
